This is part 2 in a series of post about setting up WordPress on Bluehost.com
After forwarding your domain to Bluehost you will want to set up FTP(File Transfer Protocol). This is a pretty simple process that shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes.
1. Goto Bluehost.com
2. Click on “Control Panel Login” in the upper right corner.
3. Once you arrive on the login page, enter the domain name you have registered with Bluehost and your password. Then click Login.
4. Once logged in find “Files” and click “FTP Accounts”.
5. In the “Login:” field, enter a name you want associated with this FTP login.
6. In the “Password:” field, enter a password.
7. Enter the same password in the “Password (Again)” field.
8. If you want to limit access to a specific directory or folder on your server, enter the directory/folder name in the “Directory:” field(Ex: /myTestSite). Otherwise enter a forward slash “/“. A forward slash will give you access to the “root directory” of your server, or the lowest level that you have access to.
9. Quota? You have unlimited space on Bluehost, so I wouldn’t worry too much about this. If you are creating a FTP account for someone other than yourself you may want to set a limit to what they can upload. If so, do it here.
10. Click “Create FTP Account.
11. That’s it. You can now use your favorite FTP client to login to your shared server.
If you’re looking for a good FTP App on a Mac I have used both Fetch and Flow regularly. I like them both, but both seem to have problems. Most of all if you’re in a deep directory on your site they tend to kick you back to the root level. If you like using lists in Finder on the Mac I would recommend Flow.
Fetch: http://fetchsoftworks.com/
Flow: http://extendmac.com/flow/
If you don’t want to buy anything to manage your files on a server and you use Firefox, I’d recommend FileZilla. You can get it here. http://filezilla-project.org/
Next we’ll install WordPress on Bluehost. Both the easy way and the even easier way. Then we’ll install Thematic and start a child theme. BTW: I’ll be redesigning my own site which has never really been finished throughout this process. Hopefully this time I can finish it.
